Datenschutz
Was diese Seite nicht tut
Keine Cookies. Kein Tracking, keine Analytics, keine Werbe- oder Reichweitenmessung. Keine Anmeldung, keine Uploads.
Hosting
Näheres in GitHubs Datenschutzerklärung.
Deine Rechte
(2024), Carbon emissions from the 2023 Canadian wildfires, Nature 633; der Anteil aus Boden-/Moorkohlenstoff (~76 %) aus Zhong u. a. (2026), Three-Fourths of Carbon Emissions From 2023 Record-Breaking Wildfires in Canada Traced to Soil and Peat Combustion, Geophysical Research Letters. (2018), Wildfire as a major driver of recent permafrost thaw in boreal peatlands, Nature Communications 9.

Privacy
What this site does not do
No cookies. No tracking, no analytics, no advertising or audience measurement. No uploads. Fonts, scripts, stylesheets, images and video all live on the same server as the site itself. Simply looking at this site fetches nothing from anyone else's server, so no third party gets to see anything about you while you do.
The newsletter
There is a sign-up form for the project newsletter near the foot of the page. It is provided by
Brevo (Sendinblue GmbH / Brevo SAS, Paris) and hosted on their servers at
sibforms.com. So that the site keeps the promise above, the form is not
embedded up front: at first you only see a button. Only when you click it does the form load and your
browser connect to Brevo — at which point your IP address and the usual technical connection data are
processed there. If you don't click, nothing happens.
If you do sign up, Brevo processes your email address on our behalf in order to send you the newsletter. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR); you can withdraw it at any time via the unsubscribe link in every issue, or by email. No issue goes out without an unsubscribe link.
What is stored on your device
Exactly one entry in your browser's local storage: the language you last chose, under the key
fireontheland-lang with the value de or en. It is purely functional, so
the site reopens in the same language. It never leaves your device, contains no identifier, and can be
cleared at any time from your browser settings.
Hosting
The site is hosted on GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc., San Francisco, USA). When you request a page, GitHub processes the technically necessary connection data — IP address, timestamp, requested file and user agent — in server logfiles. We have no access to those logs and receive no reports from them. GitHub is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in operating the site).
Your rights
You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability and objection (Art. 15–21 GDPR). In practice: we store nothing about you ourselves — there is no record on our side to disclose or delete. For the server logs, GitHub is the right contact. You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority; ours is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
Data and sources
Satellite imagery from the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, containing modified Copernicus Sentinel-2 data (2020, 2022, 2024). Regeneration figures from PYROPHOB — Pyrophobe Wälder, Eberswalder Forstliche Schriftenreihe vol. 77 (LFE Eberswalde, 2024). Site and species data after the Forst Zinna–Jüterbog–Keilberg nature reserve ordinance and FloraWeb (German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation). All drawings, storyboard excerpts, portraits and trip photographs come from the project Fire on the Land by Dominik Heilig; photographs from the 2023 research trip are his as well unless credited otherwise. The headline typeface AS Dehcho is a custom, work-in-progress font from the same project.
The area figure for the 2019 Jüterbog fire (around 800 ha) comes from the Teltow-Fläming district's wildfire statistics. The figure for the 2023 Northwest Territories wildfire season (over 4 million ha) comes from the Government of the Northwest Territories. The Canada-wide 2023 carbon emissions figure (~647 Tg C) comes from Byrne et al. (2024), Carbon emissions from the 2023 Canadian wildfires, Nature 633; the soil/peat-carbon share (~76%) from Zhong et al. (2026), Three-Fourths of Carbon Emissions From 2023 Record-Breaking Wildfires in Canada Traced to Soil and Peat Combustion, Geophysical Research Letters. The statement that fires on permafrost peat can thaw the ground and tip sites permanently into wetlands rests on Gibson et al. (2018), Wildfire as a major driver of recent permafrost thaw in boreal peatlands, Nature Communications 9. The biomass figures three years after the fire (aspen 3–2,765 kg/ha depending on plot, silver birch up to 138 kg/ha, Scots pine 36 kg/ha, above and below ground via PhytoCalc) come from the PYROPHOB final volume Eberswalder Forstliche Schriftenreihe Bd. 77, p. 94. The reference value of about 85 t C/ha for an established pine stand follows the German National Forest Inventory; conversion uses a 50 % carbon fraction of dry mass.
